The 2016 Book, Jacket, and Journal Show continued a 51 year tradition of excellence and looked forward to new, inspired, and innovative scholarly press design.
Judging for the 2016 AAUP Book, Jacket and Journal Show took place January 21-22 at the AAUP Central Office in New York City. This year, 258 books, 3 journals, and 348 jacket and cover designs were submitted for a total of 609 unique entries. The jurors selected 37 books and 40 jackets and covers as the very best examples from this pool of excellent design.
The 2016 Show premiered at the AAUP Annual Meeting in Philadelphia, June 16-18, 2016. Afterward, the show was exhibited at member presses around the country from September 2016 through May 2017.

2016 Show Judges
Kimberly Glyder is currently principal at Kimberly Glyder Design, a design firm based in the Philadelphia area. Her award-winning book designs and visual systems have been recognized by the AIGA at both the regional and national level, the AAUP Book, Jacket, and Journal Show, the New England Book Show, the New York Book Show, and by Print’s Regional Design Annual. A graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design, Kimberly has given lectures at various colleges and at the National Museum of Women in the Arts. Recent clients include Penguin Random House, Abrams, W.W. Norton, Johns Hopkins University Press, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, and Graywolf Press.
Benjamin Shaykin is a Providence-based designer and educator, specializing in books and other printed matter. Since 2004, he has maintained an independent practice, working primarily with publishers, museums, and arts organizations. He has been a full-time member of The Design Office since 2011. Previously, he was a designer and art director at both Chronicle Books and Mother Jones magazine. From 1995-2001, Benjamin was the founding creative director of the independent magazine Bitch: Feminist Response to Pop Culture. He received his MFA from Rhode Island School of Design, where he now serves as critic, teaching courses in typography and graphic design.
Henk van Assen graduated from the Royal Academy of Fine Art in The Hague, The Netherlands, and has an MFA from Yale University. He is founding principal of HvAD, a multidisciplinary design studio in New York City, and has worked on many projects in print, environmental, and screen-based media, for clients both international and domestic, including Acquavella Gallerie; Rizzoli; the Guggenheim Museum; the Museum of the City of New York; the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; the New York Public Library; Yale University Press; and the Museum of Arts and Design, NY. His work has been recognized by AIGA, AAUP, and the New York Book Show. Henk also is a senior critic in graphic design at Yale University and lecturer at Parsons School of Design.
Daphne Geismar plans, designs, and produces award-winning books for art museums. Her clients include the Metropolitan Museum of Art, MoMA, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and Yale University Press. Daphne is interested in projects and publications that use art and literature to educate the public on social issues: she developed and taught a photography and writing program for teenage mothers; she is currently working on a book of her family’s accounts from the Holocaust. Daphne teaches a book design class at the University of Connecticut that asks students to develop a unique visual concept that integrates three essays and focuses on typography and the grid. She has an MFA from Yale University.
