2017 Book, Jacket, and Journal Show

Judging for the 2017 Book, Jacket, and Journal Show included 241 books, 2 journals, and 320 jacket and cover designs were submitted for a total of 563 entries. The jurors carefully selected 50 books and 52 jackets and covers as the very best examples from this pool of excellent design.

The 2017 Book, Jacket, and Journal Show premiered at the AAUP Annual Meeting in Austin, June 11-13, 2017. Afterward, the show was exhibited at member presses around the country.

2017 Show Judges

Catherine Casalino has been an art director and designer in book publishing since 2003. She currently runs her own multidisciplinary studio, Catherine Casalino Design, based in New York City. Catherine began her career at Rodrigo Corral Design and has worked in-house at Simon & Schuster, Random House, Regan Arts, and Grand Central Publishing, where she oversaw the Twelve list. Her work has been recognized by AIGA, Print Magazine, the Type Directors Club, Communication Arts, Eye Magazine, and the New York Book Show.

Liam Gillick is an artist who lives and works in New York. Liam’s work has been included in numerous important exhibitions including documenta and the Venice, Berlin, and Instanbul Biennales—representing Germany in 2009 in Venice. Solo museum exhibitions have taken place at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago, the Museum of Modern Art in New York and Tate in London. His work is held in many important public collections including the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Guggenheim Museum in New York and Bilbao and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. He is a producer of short films, a prolific author, and a critic of contemporary art—contributing to Artforum, October, Frieze and e-flux Journal.

Jena Sher after receiving an undergraduate degree from Princeton University’s Woodrow Wilson School, worked at CNN.com, designing online graphics. While at CNN, she realized how powerful and meaningful words and imagery can be through graphic design. After graduating from Yale School of Art with a MFA in Graphic Design, Jena worked for Michael Bierut at Pentagram in New York. She now lives in Milwaukee and runs her own design business, Jena Sher Graphic Design. Jena’s current clients include Yale University Press, The Art Institute of Chicago, The Architectural League of New York, Peabody Essex Museum and University of Minnesota Press.

James Victore is an artist and designer who teaches creativity and personal growth. Known as “a designer to brave clients,” advisor for igniting passion, an art director, filmmaker, and author. James’ work has been exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in New York and is represented in the permanent collections of the museums around the globe. His clients include Bobbi Brown Cosmetics, Esquire Magazine, Moet Chandon and The City of New York. His work was published in a monograph titled, “Victore or, Who Died and Made You Boss?”. He has won numerous awards and accolades for his sexy, strong, and memorable work.
